The experience
Late March in the Gulf of Papagayo is the dry season at its best — blue skies, warm water, and that golden afternoon light that makes the Pacific feel unreal. We based ourselves on the beach and let the days unfold slowly: sunsets through the palms, long swims, fresh fruit at every meal. Just enough movement to feel like a journey, never a rush.
Where I stayed
- Andaz Peninsula Papagayo — Hillside villas with the best sunset terrace on the gulf.
- El Mangroove, Playa Panama — Boutique, barefoot, and right on the calm water.
Where I ate
- Pangas Beach Club — Fresh ceviche with your feet in the sand at sunset.
- Café de Playa — The seafood here ruined ceviche for me everywhere else.
Hidden gems
- Playa Nacascolo at low tide — A short walk leads to a near-empty crescent of sand.
- Palo Verde boat tour at dawn — Monkeys, iguanas and birdlife before it gets hot.
